Regular exercise provides a multitude of health benefits and is safe for most people. However, vigorous exercise is associated with a small but significant risk of adverse cardiovascular events. A critical role of the exercise professional is to mitigate this risk. This presentation will review the risks associated with exercise and the steps the exercise professional can take to prevent adverse events. ACSM’s latest pre-participation health screening recommendations, which are designed to identify individuals who are at risk for exercise-related cardiovascular events, will be reviewed.
