1st International Virtual Symposium
Saturday, June 19, 2021
Dr. Yuri Feito has been an associate professor
of Exercise Science at Kennesaw State University and is a Fellow of the
American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).
He has been involved in the medical
fitness industry for over 15 years working with a variety of clinical
population.
Dr. Feito obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee,
Knoxville (USA) in Exercise Physiology, and has master degrees in Clinical Exercise
Physiology and Public Health. He is certified as a Clinical Exercise
Physiologist (CEP) and is currently the ACSM’s Education and Professional
Development Strategist and the Chair of the ACSM’s International Health &
Fitness Summit Program Committee.
His recent research interests are focused on
physiological and psychological adaptations of CrossFit-based training
protocols in various populations.
He also is an Associate Editor of the 11th
edition of ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription and the 6th
edition of ACSM’s Fitness Assessment Manualnsider patterns of change in
metabolic syndrome, including cross-cultural comparisons.
High-intensity functional training (HIFT) is an exercise modality that emphasizes functional, multi-joint movements that can be modified to any fitness level and elicit greater muscle recruitment than more traditional exercise. As a relatively new training modality, HIFT is often compared to high-intensity interval training (HIIT), yet the two are distinct. HIIT exercise is characterized by relatively short bursts of repeated vigorous activity, interspersed by periods of rest or low-intensity exercise for recovery, while HIFT utilizes constantly varied functional exercises and various activity durations that may or may not incorporate rest. This lecture will present the evidence supporting the effectiveness of HIFT on several health and fitness parameters through significant improvements in metabolic and cardiorespiratory fitness in various populations.
